A field visit to Tendruk Central School (SEN school)
Despite knowing I had an early field trip the next day, I ended up staying awake until 3 AM. I set multiple alarms starting from 5 AM to ensure I woke up on time. When the first alarm buzzed at 5 AM, my initial instinct was to silence it and skip the trip altogether, as I've always valued sleep over everything else and mornings have never been my strong suit. However, a sudden realization hit me when the next alarm rang at 5:30 AM, "this might be my final opportunity to experience Tendruk". With that thought in mind, I sprang into action, swiftly getting ready to leave by the planned 6 AM departure time. We gathered for breakfast at the mess hall before embarking on our journey to Tendruk, a destination located approximately 69 km away from our college, with an estimated travel time of 3 hours.
Upon arrival, the warm welcome from the school staff, including SEN educators and the principal, was overwhelming. Following a brief introduction, we were given the opportunity to participate in pull-out and push-in sessions to observe and engage with SEN students. The school's commitment to inclusivity, bridging the gap between general and SEN students, was commendable.
However, despite the chance to interact, I felt a sense of helplessness due to my lack of training in interacting with SEN students. This inability to express myself or know how best to engage with them was emotionally challenging. Seeing their present happiness despite physical disadvantages evoked feelings of pity, coupled with concern for their future well-being as they navigate the challenges of growing up.
